The Hidden Cocktail Bar Melbourne CBD Didn’t See Coming

Not every great bar announces itself. Bar Ferdinand is on Level 1 of 7 Alfred Place — up a wide carpeted staircase, above the group’s steak frites restaurant. From the street, there’s nothing to signal what’s up there. Broadsheet included it in their roundup of the best new CBD bars in May 2026, describing it as serving “forward-thinking drinks inspired by flora found in Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens.”

Twenty-one seats. Herringbone floors, burgundy leather lounges, marble tables, and brass finishes. A hanging installation of dried Queen Anne’s Lace above the bar. It’s the kind of room that rewards the climb.

Eight Gardens, One Bar

Eight botanical collections form the backbone of the menu. As Broadsheet noted, “the drinks’ names stay the same, while the cocktails themselves keep evolving” — the structure is fixed, but the drinks inside it move with the season.

The Eucalypt is calvados, nashi pear wine, and eucalypt soda, carbonated into a clean highball. The Herb brings fig leaf gin with macadamia orgeat, sage, and lemon. The Fern is built on cognac, kaolin clay, pu-erh tea, and a petrichor mist, designed to evoke the cool, earthy feeling of a fernery after rain. Two house signatures complete the list: a House Martini and a House Japanese Slipper made with yuzu and house melon, a nod to the cocktail created in this exact building in the 1980s.

The Full Evening at Alfred Place

Downstairs, 7 Alfredserves one dish: a 220-gram O’Connor grass-fed scotch fillet with beef tallow frites and four house sauces. Dinner downstairs, drinks upstairs.

Bar Ferdinand is open from 5pm seven days, until midnight Sunday to Thursday and 1am Friday and Saturday.
