The Best Date Bar in Melbourne CBD Has a Cocktail Menu Like No Other

Urban List described drinking at Bar Ferdinand as feeling like “strolling through a leafy botanic garden, soft light peering through the treetops, delicious drink in hand.” That’s the atmosphere. Twenty-one seats, a heritage 1885 room, and a cocktail menu structured like a walk through a fictional garden. Urban List listed it under great for dates. It’s easy to see why.

The Setting

Level 1 of 7 Alfred Place is reached via a wide carpeted staircase. The room is warm and moody — heritage bones, botanical flourishes, lighting that does the evening a favour. It’s intimate enough to feel considered, spacious enough to be comfortable. The kind of room that makes conversation easier.

A Menu That Moves

Eight botanical collections form the menu — Camellia, Rose, Fern, Eucalypt and more. Each drink captures the feeling of its garden rather than the ingredient literally. The Fern evokes cool earthiness after rain. The Camellia is bright and gently savoury. The drinks shift with the season, which means no two visits are identical. For a date, there’s always something to order, compare and discover.

Two house signatures sit outside the garden structure and, as Urban List noted, “will never change”: a House Martini and a House Japanese Slipper. The Slipper was created in this exact building in 1984. Order it first. It has a good story to kick the night off with.
